The last remaining true San Bushman people live in the Kalahari area of the Northern Cape, the area, especially along the Orange and Vaal rivers is rich in San rock engravings. The Northern Cape is South Africa’s largest province, known for its desert landscapes, wildlife and gemstones. Wild daisies and other springtime flowers carpet the typically arid plains of Namaqualand, a region stretching into Namibia.
The province lies to the south of its most important asset, the mighty Orange River, which feeds the agriculture and alluvial diamonds industries. The Northern Cape is home to the world’s largest telescope, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), the greatest portion of which is currently being built at Carnarvon. Sutherland is the site of the southern hemisphere’s largest astronomical observatory.
