Teniqua Treetops is set in the forest at the base of the Outeniqua Mountains, this rustic ecolodge comprises handcrafted treehouses, and uses rain and river water. Cosy, tent-style treehouses have 1 to 2 bedrooms, kitchens, living/dining areas, and en suite bathrooms with dry toilets, plus decks with BBQs and scenic views.
Facilities & Activities
Amenities include a BBQ area, a playground and a game room, as well as an outdoor pool complex made from converted dams that has a solar-heated hot tub, a deep pool and a kids’ pool. Swim in the cola-coloured water of the remote and unspoiled Karatara river, picnic on its beautiful banks and explore the deep forested gorge. The chill out on the wooden deck of the swimming complex perched high on the hill, the converted farm dams are fun for both kids and adults.
The entertainment areas are particularly family friendly and include a huge jungle gym with integral swing, trampoline, and 2 swimming pools, a safe, shallow ‘baby’ pool and a deep pool with inflatables, balancing beam etc. The ‘baby pool has been converted to a jacuzzi, so it has a shallow seat all the way round for a small child, and is very popular with the parents. It is currently solar heated. They have a large entertainment/games room with table tennis, darts, books, computer games, exercise equipment etc.
Where more privacy is required, there are two 2-bedroom 4-sleeper treehouses called Philosopher’s Perch and Forest Elders. However there are gaps in the railings as it improves the view and openness of the tree houses, but decrease’s safety. All treehouses have fully equipped kitchen facilities including cookers, microwaves, fridges, and all utensils. The tree houses are fully serviced. The tree houses offer a unique opportunity to sleep, eat and shower up in the canopy of the forest, surrounded by birdsong and butterflies. Built on hand crafted platforms and situated in carefully chosen beauty spots, they have comfortable tented bedrooms, fully equipped kitchens and leafy luxury bathrooms.
Ideal for a family of four, this unit stretches through the canopy exposing a high view of the forested Karatara gorge far below. The huge Safari tent includes Queen sized bed, double bunk and en suite bathroom. The fully equipped kitchen, dining and lounge areas are sheltered under verandah’s.
GREENBEARD (Wheelchair access)
If peace, tranquillity and fresh air appeal, this is the place to be. This treehouse has recently been upgraded to include a large bath for 2 on the front deck, with views into the gorge. It has a separate shower, wheelchair accessible so you can roll into the shower, there are seats all around and the shower tray is under the deck.
Teniqua Treetops is a family run resort and we particularly welcome families with children. Especially for families, they have two tree houses that sleep 4 in one bedroom, called The Eyrie and Tranquillity. These are most suitable for kids under 12. They have a queen and a bunk bed in the bedroom, separate lounge, kitchen, bathroom and deck area. They both have toddler friendly railings.
Goukamma Nature and Marine Reserve is situated along the scenic Garden Route on the Cape south coast. It lies approximately 40km east of George and 20km west of Knysna, a short drive from Teniqua Treetops.
